"Le Jury du Prix Photographique Ville de Levallois-Epson 2011, réuni mercredi 7 septembre à Levallois, a décidé à l’unanimité de décerner le quatrième Prix Photographique Ville de Levallois – Epson à Alexander Gronsky (Estonie, 1980), pour sa série Mountains & Waters.
Le Prix consiste en une bourse de 10 000 euros assortie de la production d'une exposition dans le cadre de la quatrième édition du festival.
Fidèle à la vocation internationale du Prix, le jury 2011 a rassemblé des professionnels venus d'Europe et d'Asie, qui ont élu son travail parmi 239 dossiers, en provenance de 41 pays".

I did see an Appel à candidatures pour la sélection des artistes présentés dans l’exposition panafricaine, but I can't download/open the documents. "This African Photography Biennial, which is now recognised around the world, has been a key event for the last 17 years in the African and Caribbean artistic programme supported by the Institut français. Since my last post on this award, things have evolved. I agree that the Prix Pictet is now one of the leading prizes in photography. Prize money, recognition, publicity for the laureates and short listed photographers are quite epic. Awareness for sustainability is well raised.

"Launched in 2008 by the Geneva-based private bank Pictet & Cie, the Prix Pictet has rapidly established itself as the world’s leading prize in photography and sustainability. It has a unique mandate – to use the power of photography to communicate vital messages to a global audience. The goal is to uncover art of the highest order, applied to confront the pressing social and environmental challenges of the new millennium.

The Prix Pictet has two elements: the prize of CHF 100,000 awarded to the photographer who, in the opinion of the independent jury, has produced a series of work that speaks most powerfully to the theme of the award; and the Commission, awarded by the Partners of Pictet & Cie, in which a shortlisted photographer is invited to undertake a field trip to a region where the Bank is supporting a sustainability project.

American photographer Chris Jordan was invited to undertake the third Price Pictet Commission.

The fourth theme of the Prix will be Power.

Between now and January 2012 a network of 180 experts from five continents, acting as nominators for the prize, will scan the globe in search of images that are both of the highest artistic merit and have the narrative power to provoke and disturb, but also to inspire".

The Shortlist will be announced at the festival Les Rencontres d’Arles in July 2012.

I came across a photo contest that I had not seen before. The APO contest however has been around : six competitions since 2001.

I read through the rules and could not find anything unusual with regard to photo rights. "APO-Asian photographers", you might want to check it out. BTW, should one of you have had experiences with the APO Photo Contest, don't hesitate to share them over here.

"Photos must show scenes from everyday life reflecting either productivity, sustainable development, or both. Productivity means “improved or better ways of doing things,” while sustainable development means “progress with due regard for environmental protection.” This photo contest is intended to depict only positive aspects related to the theme".

Paris Photo Book Prize

Paris Photo 2011

This year I should visit Paris Photo fair again. Because Paris Photo will celebrate its 15th anniversary with a theme/exhibition that has my interest : African photography from Bamako to Cape Town, "unveiling the creative wealth of historic and contemporary African artists". Also I'm quite curious to see the four programmes are about that will "articulate Paris Photo’s new identity".

One of which is the “Paris Photo Book Prize” :

For its first edition, the Paris Photo Book Prize will reward a reference photographic book that has marked the past 15 years. The Prize is made with the Aperture Foundation and benefits from the support of Leica. The Paris Photo Photo Book Prize – will be announced on Thursday 10th November, 2011.

It celebrates the memory of the great photographer of the Weimar Republic, Dr. Erich Salomon, whom many regard as the principal founder of modern photojournalism.

The award comprises a certificate and a Leica M Camera, engraved with the name of the recipient. It is presented every year, alongside the Cultural Award, as the highest distinction of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie (DGPh). Among the award winners are magazines, organizations and television as well as persons who have done photography a great service in publications or who have excelled as photojournalists.

Asim Rafiqui (Sweden/US) - $25,000 grant, for his project, “The Idea of India: Religious and Cultural Pluralism as Resistance to Sectarian Conflict,” an exploration of the aftermath of religious conflict in India through documenting pluralist landscapes, shared sacred sites, shared cultural traditions and efforts at reconciliation within divided communities.
Louie Palu (Canada) - $15,000 grant, for his project, “Home Front,” which explores and compares the experiences of American Vietnam War veterans, and returning soldiers from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Palu’s project focuses on the emotional and psychological issues faced by soldiers who return from war and the long-term effects they deal with as they try to reintegrate into their families and society.

The UNICEF Photo of the Year 2009 is part Johan Bävman’s series “Albino – In the shadow of the sun”. Ten-year-old Selina is one of about 150,000 albinos in Tanzania. Her body does not produce enough melanin. Her skin, hair and eyes therefore need special protection against the sun. Many people with albinism suffer from skin cancer or severe visual impairment. Their average life expectancy in countries such as Tanzania is 30 years. Due to the light color of their skin, they are stared at, ridiculed and ostracized. They are called “zeru zeru” – the children of the devil. The boarding school in Mwanza, Northern Tanzania, where the UNICEF Photo of the Year was taken, is surrounded by a 2m fence. Originally built for visually impaired children, the school has become a sanctuary for more than 100 albino children. Here they are protected by the police who patrol the area also at night. This became necessary since albinos in the region near Lake Victoria became target of unprecedented brutality about three years ago. They are mutilated and killed because their body parts are traditionally regarded and sold as talismans. Superstitious locals think they will help them to catch more fish in Lake Victoria or find gold and diamonds. According to official sources, more than 40 albinos have been murdered in Tanzania; the real numbers are likely to be higher, as many cases go unreported. Meanwhile the government started taking stronger action and it now looks as if violence against albinos is declining. Read more

Alice Smeets : Surviving in Haiti

Her winning picture shows a girl in the largest slum in Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital. Although she has to live between dirt and rubbish, the girl is wearing a clean white dress with matching ribbons in her hair whilst walking barefoot through the mud. “The photo shows us the courage and energy of a little girl who is growing up in the face of adversity. Children from the poorest backgrounds often demonstrate great strength” said UNICEF patroness Eva Luise Köhler at the award ceremony on Thursday in Berlin. “The UNICEF-Photo of the Year is a plea to heed and support these children”.

International experts of photography are asked by UNICEF Germany to encourage young photographers to make a submission. The photographers submit five to ten photos that demonstrate a high level of photography and visually interpret living situations of children.
The first prize: a photo assignment from German GEO magazine and Leica camera equipment.
There is no possibility to enter the contest without nomination.

For the Visa d’or awards for news reporting and feature reporting, and the City of Perpignan award for the Best Young Reporter, picture editors select a shortlist from all reports seen over the past year (both published and unpublished), choosing four nominees per category. A second jury meets in Perpignan to choose the winners for each Visa d’or award (News, Feature and Daily Press).

Take a view - Landscape photographer of the year

The competition opened on 15th April 2011 and closed at 15th July 2011. (Expect a similar timeline for 2012)

‘Take a view’ is an annual photographic competition open to everyone except employees of Lightworx Ltd or Light & Land Ltd, their families and relatives, and (except as set out below in this paragraph) anyone else connected with this competition. Top prize of £10,000 for the Landscape Photographer of the Year 2011. Entries must be of the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands. Entries must have been taken within the five years immediately prior to the closing date.

The judges will choose the single best image from all four Adult categories. The photographer of this image will be awarded the prestigious title, ‘Landscape Photographer of the Year 2011’ and £10,000.
For the images judged to be the best in each of the four categories, there will be a prize of £1000.
For the images judged second in each of the four adult categories, there will be prizes of £500.

For a proposal on « Tears in Congo ». Jean has already worked in the various hospitals and clinics in Congo. She plans to complete the story in showing the women in their environment both before and after; and to further document their lives after the hospitals to see how they re-integrate into the society they used to belong to. The 8.000 € grant is supported by Canon Europe and the pictures should be presented next year in the 21st Visa pour l'Image - Perpignan.

The Jury has selected 20 pictures among which the RW Club members have voted for their favorite one. The RW Club is happy to announce that the winner of the 2008 RW Club members’ special award is : Richard Hines from Canada.

The 2008 RW Club International Photography Prize will take place from 29 September 2008 until 28 November 2008, 11h00 GMT.

This third edition is open to all photographers (professionals and amateurs) members of the RW Club who wish to use photography as a mean of artistic expression.

A panel of prestigious international experts will select the winner of this €12,000 prize from among the living artists represented by the Paris Photo 2008 participating galleries. Why conceptual photography is having a prized moment

"This year's Deutsche Börse prize seems designed to blur the lines between conceptual art and contemporary photography – perfect for provoking debate and grabbing public attention.

Photography, like art, pop and literature before it, is now awash with prizes. In the last few weeks, the shortlist for the Deutsche Börse photography prize (£30,000) has been announced, as well as the winners of the Taylor Wessing prize for portraiture (£12,000) and the Prix Pictet (100,000 Swiss francs), which is dedicated to photography and sustainability. Every major photography festival now has an awards evening attached, and there's even a Google Photography prize for students, co-organised by the Saatchi Gallery"...

After re-reading your reactions and viewing the latest statistics of this blog (it's still consulted frequently), I almost felt the urge to revive it. That is to say, in perhaps a slimmer form with a strong focus on the *gem* opportunities for photographers.... But then again, few of you have taking up sharing grants and awards information. See the comments and PGA, Part 2. (So, let me reflect more and see how things evolve...).
In the meantime, to all that have responded and to those that are building on this blog, thanks and 'courage' to you.

My last photography grants and awards post

In 2007 I set up this blog. I had become curious about photo awards/honours, after winning an award. When I noticed that there was not a substantial online resource available, information was (still is) scattered, I decided to compile and share information.

The ongoing rise in numbers of visitors/readers, referrers and feedback made it clear that there was a need for a blog like this. And so I have been postponing this post for a while. But now is the time to focus. I want to dedicate my time to my own core projects/activities again. Also I need to distance myself from certain photography + art + marketing trends/issues and redefine the essence of photography for myself I guess...

Friends, I found out that there are true gem opportunities (all grants and the older =often no entry fee charging= competitions plus few new ones) and I have mapped the major ones. I noticed (with relief) that leading photo sites, blogs and institutions have added sections "photo grants and awards" and provide a lot of information now. No doubt these professionals have the means to keep you up to date.

So, stay updated, be inspired, keep away from the crap contests and be ware of your rights.

I will leave the blog up and I thank all that have been in touch, gave input and feedback.

En Foco, Inc and Canson Infinity invite fine art and documentary photographers of any nationality or ethnicity to submit work to People/Places/Things, an international competition celebrating En Foco’s 35th Anniversary.

Our aim is to identify and promote talented emerging and mid-career artists working today, creating cross-cultural dialogue, and providing artists with exposure and access to those that may be able to envision opportunities beyond the scope of this competition. All photo-based works are eligible.

WINNERS of the PX3 2009 photo competition : Erwin Olaf and Annett Reimer

"This book brings together for the first time three of the artist’s series—Rain, Hope, and Grief. Included is a first comprehensive look at his film work, through stills and an accompanying DVD that offers an overview of five of his movies, each related to the series featured in the book. In each series, Olaf creates his own enigmatic and enticing worlds, blending together a Norman Rockwell-style kitsch, a film noir intensity, and a strangeness reminiscent of the films of American filmmaker David Lynch. The work wryly celebrates America of the 1950s and 1960s with stereotypical characters, including cheerleaders, a boy scout, a housewife, a young couple, and a sailor. He explores issues of beauty, loneliness, and despair, expressed in an individual style that combines fashion, cinema, history and advertising".

"The Unhomely Stage addresses the relationship between body, place and memory. The location of the work holds high importance, as does the performance, the location used is of high personal value. I used the home of my grandmother as a Surrealist stage to explore femininity, sexuality and loss. The Unhomely Stage is set at a house that has not been lived in for almost a decade. The house has been left completely furnished and nothing has been removed since when it was lived in. There is a presence of memories colliding with the large uninhibited space. The female body is fragmented and dismembered, fracturing the power of the photographic gaze. The performances are quiet, yet powerful evocations of a hidden unknown".

Or will we soon see a final final deadline? I think this is bad communication and habit. You unnessecarily rush people to submit work and then you simply extend deadlines twice. I wonder why this is done. Not enough submissions (and fees) received? An explanation for extending twice would be nice for a change...).

The PHotoEspaña Baume & Mercier 2009 Award has been granted to photographer Malick Sidibé (Mali, 1936). The Malian photographer receives this reward as recognition to his exceptional condition of portrait artist, his sensibility and personality. All that makes him one of the most renowned photographers of Africa. With pictures taken in its own study -Studio Malick- during the 50s and 60s, Sidibé has documented an important period of the history of Africa, a phase of emancipation, cultural changes, pride and hope in the future. His sensitive, enthusiastic, and compromised look has created simple, authentic, and full of truth images showing the special complicity between the photographer and its portrayed.

The Bartolome Ros Award, gifted with 12,000 €, has been granted to photographer Isabel Muñoz. In past editions the following artists have been awarded: Ricard Terre, Javier Vallhonrat, Marta Gili, Alejandro Castellote, Kowasa library, Joan Fontcuberta, Alberto Garcia-Alix, Juan Manuel Castro Prieto, Ramon Masats, Cristina Garcia Rodero and Publio Lopez Mondejar.

New rules, new prizes
"Again this year, we are opening the 2009 contest to all established professional photographers using large and medium format cameras, regardless of brand. We will award 9 Hasselblad Masters designations, accepting submissions in Fine Art, Nature/Landscape, Social/Wedding, Portrait, Fashion, Editorial, Product, Architecture, and General Photography categories. We have even established a special category for up and coming photographers that is open to all professional photographers, regardless of length of time in the business or camera format used.

All shooting done in conjunction with the Hasselblad Masters program or its activities shall be done using entirely Hasselblad gear. To this end, winners of the 2009 Masters Awards will receive an equipment sponsorship agreement with Hasselblad wherein they will receive the use of an H3D digital camera system for the creation of images for a special Masters Commemorative book to be published. This book will allow the ten winning photographers to freely interpret a theme or themes in whatever creative manner they see fit, celebrating the range and versatility of both Hasselblad cameras and Hasselblad photographers".

The theme is exceedingly current while also being paradoxical in a world favoring global nomadism and the partial disappearance of borders. The 8th edition of the Bamako Encounters, African Photography Biennial has set out to get the population of Bamako more involved in the event, explore the cross-cutting nature of disciplines and languages, and reinforce the event's influence and notoriety on the international scene so that Bamako will in time be seen as the African capital of image. Yesterday I received a press release (thank you) about another award : Prix Pictet sustainability. Here's an update for you.

Water crisis in Bangladesh* highlighted at launch of Prix Pictet 2009.

Photographs by Munem Wasif revealing the daily impact of the scarcity of clean, safe water on the people of south-west Bangladesh* go on display for the first time from 9 March at the Mall Galleries, London. Wasif was one of eighteen leading international photographers shortlisted for the 2008 Prix Pictet.

In 2008 the theme of the Prize was ‘water’. For the 2009 prize, over seventy nominators from six continents have already begun the search to identify the image, or set of images, that will have the power and artistic quality to convey this year’s theme of ‘earth’. ‘Earth’ refers not only to the planet and the soil beneath our feet, but also to the marks that man makes on the face of the land—either directly by creating mines, toxic waste, vast refuse dumps and blasted desert landscapes; or indirectly, through the scars left by fire, flood or famine. It also refers to the impact of natural disasters: earthquakes, landslides and volcanoes.

Without these basic resources, hundreds of people die of easily preventable water-related diseases. In the Satkhira district, where the Shyamnagar Upazilla project is located, many water sources are contaminated by naturally occurring arsenic or saline water. As a result of climate change and unplanned shrimp farming, the area is experiencing a gradual increase in the salinity of the water, frequent natural disasters and erratic rainfall".

"The Prix Pictet is a major new global prize in photography that focuses on perhaps the greatest single issue of the twenty-first century: sustainability. The award is sponsored by Pictet & Cie, in association with the Financial Times.

With a single annual prize of CHF 100,000, the Prix Pictet will reward photographers and the images they use to tell stories of urgent global significance. Each year the Prix Pictet will focus on a distinct sustainability theme".

The theme for 2008 was Water. The theme for 2009 is Earth.

National Geographic "All roads photography program"

The Photography Program recognizes and supports talented international storytellers whose still photography documents their changing cultures and communities. Each year four photographers are awarded a financial prize, and their photo essays are exhibited at the All Roads Film Festival and other venues. They also receive photographic accessories and, through workshops, get valuable training to assist in their fieldwork.
Candidates are nominated by an advisory board of leaders from the photography industry and representatives from National Geographic Society.

"Anthony Suau (USA) wins premier award. The international jury of the 52nd annual World Press Photo Contest have selected a black-and-white image by American photographer Anthony Suau as World Press Photo of the Year 2008.

The picture shows an armed officer of the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department moving through a home in Cleveland, Ohio, following eviction as a result of mortgage foreclosure. Officers have to ensure that the house is clear of weapons, and that the residents have moved out. The winning photograph, taken in March 2008, is part of a story commissioned by Time magazine. The story as a whole won Second Prize in the Daily Life category of the contest".

The Robert Gardner Fellowship in Photography funds an “established practitioner of the photographic arts to create and subsequently publish through the Peabody Museum a major book of photographs on the human condition anywhere in the world.”

The same body of work may also be featured in a photographic exhibition at the Peabody Museum.

The Fellowship committee invites nominations from a rotating panel of curators, educators, and independent photo professionals from around the world; nominees are reviewed and selected by a committee of three. The Google Photography Prize 2009 is a global competition for students to create themes for iGoogle. Run in collaboration with the Saatchi Gallery London, the Google Photography Prize is open to students across the world.

The shortlist: 36 shortlisted entries will be turned into iGoogle themes, shown on Google and put to public vote.
The finalists: 6 finalists will be exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery London, and reviewed by our independent jury.

PDN brought us the news that Alessandra Sanguinetti is this year’s winner of the National Geographic Magazine Grant for Photography.

Wonderful, fascinating photography! As the news and her portfolio is not yet flagged on the NGM's website, see her work on Magnum's website. Yes, she is a nominee since 2007.

Any professional photographer whose primary source of income is his or her photography is eligible. Applications will be accepted from Nov. 1, 2008, through Feb. 15, 2009. The application process will require a written statement outlining a proposed or current project and examples of the applicant's photography. The work presented should demonstrate an ability to competently photograph the project being undertaken or proposed.

Grant for photography $ 50,000.

"We will be looking for a photographic project that improves our understanding and appreciation of the unique world in which we live”, said David Griffin.

Robert Adams - The 2009 Hasselblad Award Winner

American photographer Robert Adams from Astoria, Oregon, has been selected as the 29th winner of the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography. The award was presented to Robert Adams at a press conference at Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco on April 14, 2009. He received the prize from the Honorable Barbro Osher, Consul General, Consulate General of Sweden, San Francisco. The award sum was SEK 500,000. An exhibition of the award winner’s work, Robert Adams – 2009 Hasselblad Award Winner, will open at the Hasselblad Center, Göteborg Art Museum on November 6, 2009.

The Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography for 2008 has been made to Graciela Iturbide from Mexico City.
The Foundation’s citation:

Graciela Iturbide is considered one of the most important and influential Latin American photographers of the past four decades. Her photography is of the highest visual strength and beauty. Graciela Iturbide has developed a photographic style based on her strong interest in culture, ritual and everyday life in her native Mexico and other countries. Iturbide has extended the concept of documentary photography, to explore the relationships between man and nature, the individual and the cultural, the real and the psychological. She continues to inspire a younger generation of photographers in Latin America and beyond.

Hasselblad awards

Yearly. The Hasselblad award is granted to “a photographer recognized for major achievements”.Today the award comprises the sum of SEK 500,000, a gold medal and a diploma. In conjunction with the award ceremony, an exhibition of the work of the award winner opens at the Hasselblad Center.

Ten years after the original M.I.L.K. Competition a brand new competition was launched in August 2008. Fresh 'M.I.L.K.' was a US$125,000 online competition that challenged photographers to capture spontaneous and emotive moments shared between friends, families and lovers around the world. After receiving nearly 35,000 entries from photographers in 112 countries, 150 extraordinary images from around the world, again chosen by Elliott Erwitt, continue to celebrate our moments of intimacy, laughter and kinship.

Friendship, Family, Love & Laughter was published in November 2009. The book includes the 150 winning images from the Fresh M.I.L.K. competition selected by Elliott Erwitt, and an introduction by M.I.L.K. creator Geoff Blackwell and retails for US$50.00 (or local currency equivalent)..

Journalism entries must be submitted on or before February 1 to cover work in the previous calendar year.

Entries for journalism awards may be made by any individual based on material coming from a text-based United States newspaper or news site that publishes at least weekly during the calendar year and that adheres to the highest journalistic principles. American Photographer David Zimmerman Wins L'Iris D'Or Award, 2009 =with indeed wonderful fine art landscape photographs=

Zimmerman : "My documentation of these remarkable deserts throughout Arizona, New Mexico, California and Nevada continues in an effort to influence preservation through public awareness, opinion and action." On the announcement of his award, Zimmerman said: "I am thrilled beyond belief, and I want to thank you for this award. There was some wonderful work from some wonderful photographers... I hope this work continues, to make us feel, think and laugh, and I share this award with all the photographers doing terrific work out there."

Vincent Foong, from Singapore, was announced as the Sony World Photography Awards Amateur Photographer of the Year for his image in the Natural History category.

The professional finalists and amateur winners of the 2009 Sony World Photography Awards are announced. The 44 photographers, from 22 separate countries, beat off stiff competition from the 186 shortlisted photographers, revealed last month. Each of the photographers on the list will be exhibited and honoured at the Sony World Photography Awards ceremony at the prestigious Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France, on Thursday 16 April.

Of the 12 professional category winners, one photographer will be the recipient of the L’Iris D’Or, the Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year. On the night they will be awarded $25,000 along with Sony camera equipment. The winning amateur photographer, selected from the eight category finalists, will receive a $5,000 cash prize and Sony camera equipment.

Moving Walls 15 aims to visually represent the transitional condition of open societies and the promotion and maintenance of democratic values. It is an artistic interpretation of obstacles—such as political oppression, economic instability, and racism—and the struggles to tear those barriers down. Moving Walls 15 includes six photographers covering a range of social justice and human rights issues of significance to OSI.

OSI Distribution Grant 2009

The OSI Documentary Photography Project provides grants to encourage new ways of presenting documentary photography to the public.

Traditional media offer limited opportunities for presenting documentary photographs in a way that creates a meaningful and lasting impact on the communities or issues addressed in the images. The Open Society Institute Documentary Photography Project is offering a grant to documentary photographers who have already completed a significant body of work on issues of social justice to collaborate with a partner organization and propose new ways of using photography as a tool for positive social change.

All photographers must have another entity (such as a nonprofit, NGO, or community-based organization) that will work with the photographer to design an innovative distribution strategy that targets specific communities and advocates for social change. The partner must engage with the photographer to accomplish these goals—and not just fund or publish the project.

Grants of $5,000 to $30,000 will be awarded.

Lisa Tuttle, to partner with The Dirty Truth Campaign, to curate photographs taken by residents of six neighborhoods in Atlanta, Georgia, and create street corner installations within these neighborhoods in order to organize local residents around issues of displacement, gentrification, and disinvestment in their communities. $23,000.

Arthur Robinson Williams, to partner with the American Medical Student Association, to utilize photographs from the "My Right Self" project to educate health care students and professionals about transsexual and gender-variant individuals. $15,000.

Lori Waselchuk, to partner with the Louisiana-Mississippi Hospice & Palliative Care Organization, to curate "Grace Before Dying," a photography exhibition on Angola Prison's hospice program, and tour the exhibit to correctional facilities in Mississippi and Louisiana to encourage the integration of hospice programs as part of prison healthcare. $25,000.

The 2007 Distribution Grant Winners :

Wendy Ewald will repatriate photographs made by Innu children in 1969 and distribute, locally and provincially, new images made in collaboration with the Innu nation.
Leora Kahn will exhibit in Rwanda photographs and interviews with 25 Hutu rescuers during the 1994 Rwandan genocide to foster reconciliation and peace-building between Hutu and Tutsi in Rwanda.
Tim Matsui will conduct speaker engagements as part of a multimedia presentation in Seattle public schools that aims to create a dialogue on the lasting effects of sexual violence on individuals and communities.
Breaking the Silence will exhibit “Israeli Soldiers Talk About the Occupied Territories,” photographs and testimonies from ex-Israeli soldiers in Boston and Philadelphia.
Jonathan Torgovnik's “Intended Consequences: Genocide Mothers, Children of Rape, ”a chronicle of women and their children who were born out of rape during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, will tour U.S. colleges and universities.

Photo competition for young Europeans (PES group photo competion)

For the second year in a row, the PES Group in the Committee of the Regions is organising a photo competition for young Europeans, aged 18-30. This year the competition, organised under the theme "Europe in my everyday life", intends to raise awareness among young people on the positive impact of European integration on their everyday lives.

The photo competition is an opportunity for young Europeans to show what Europe really means for them and express their creativity through their camera lenses.

The competition is organised in the framework of 2009, European year for Creativity and innovation. The competition has been officially launched on 12 february, on the occasion of the PES Group meeting in Brussels, and will close on 31 May 2009.

A jury composed of PES Group members and professionals in the visual arts will meet to select 6 winners who will be awarded high-value photographic equipment and will be invited to a Conference on "the added value of the European Union" that the PES Group will organise in Brussels, in September 2009. Photos will be displayed in an exhibition.

The winner of the annual Deutsche Börse Photography Prize was announced on 25 March 2009: Paul Graham. Congratulations.

(27.02.2009) Paul Graham (b. 1956, UK) is nominated for his publication a shimmer of possibility (steidlMACK, October 2007). a shimmer of possibility comprises twelve individual volumes of photographic short stories of life in contemporary America. Graham infuses lyricism into the most mundane of everyday human activities – fetching mail or lighting a cigarette – and creates quiet photographic moments, ‘filmic haikus’, which suggest and hint at a narrative but ultimately remain open-ended. At once poetic and political, his photographs manage to draw out something truly profound from the almost-nothingness of everyday life.

Emily Jacir (b. 1970, Kuwait) is nominated for her installation Material for a film, shown at the Venice Biennale 2007 (7 June – 21 November 2007). Material for a film documents the assassination of the Palestinian intellectual Wael Zuwaiter by Israeli agents in Rome in 1972 for what they believed was his role in the massacre of Israeli athletes at the Summer Olympics of that year. Using photographs, objects, texts and interviews, Jacir combines the role of archivist, activist, and poet to create a poignant work of art that is at once intensely personal and deeply political and bears witness to a culture torn apart by war and displacement.

Tod Papageorge (b. 1940, USA) is nominated for the exhibition Passing Through Eden – Photographs of Central Park, exhibited at Michael Hoppen Gallery, London (7 March – 12 April 2008). Taken between 1969 and 1991, Papageorge’s black & white photographs of Manhattan’s Central Park are less a document of a place than an urban version of the Garden of Eden. Immersing himself in the free-flowing life of the park, Papageorge has created a body of work that joins the grace of ‘street photography’ to the beauty of exact photographic description, a union that grants his photographs an expressive breadth ranging from surreal comedy to intimations of despair.

Taryn Simon (b. 1975, USA) is nominated for her solo exhibition An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar at The Photographers’ Gallery, London (13 September – 11 November 2007). Assuming the dual role of shrewd informant and collector of curiosities, Simon compiles a photographic inventory of what lies hidden and inaccessible within the borders of the United States. At once chilling and beautiful, her photographs and texts document diverse subjects from the realms of science, government, medicine, entertainment, nature, security, and religion. Examining that which is integral to America's foundation and mythology, Simon creates a collection of works that reflect on and reveal a national identity.

The Deutsche Börse Photography Prize aims to reward a contemporary photographer of any nationality, who has made the most significant contribution (exhibition or publication) to the medium of photography in Europe in the previous year.

The Prize was originally set up in 1996 by The Photographers' Gallery in London to promote the best of contemporary photography. Deutsche Börse has sponsored the £30,000 prize since 2005. The Prize showcases new talents and highlights the best of international photography practice.

W. Eugene Smith learned the hard way that photography could be too easy, a matter of making expert images of interesting subjects. He set himself to learn the truth - about himself as well as his subjects. In the process, he produced a series of photographic essays, for LIFE and other publications, whose passionate involvement set a standard for what photography can be.

Yearly. For a photographer whose past work and proposed project, as judged by a panel of experts, follows the tradition of W. Eugene Smith's compassionate dedication. For 2009, the amount of the grant will be $30,000. An additional $5,000 in fellowship money will be dispersed, at the discretion of the jury, to one or more finalists deemed worthy of special recognition. Awards will be presented in a ceremony held in New York City in early October.

Deadline for receipt of applications : (May 15, 2009) extended to June 1.

(08.03.2009 - 21.00 h) Now this is interesting to me, your editor from Europe : the trend to design toward prestigious. But, note the differences over here with regard to : focus, concept, entry fees and glamorous ceremonies. Here rather no entry fees or low fees, portfolio reviews and cash awards for photographers and hence no costly grand gala parties? Also the European festivals have a strong education and formation focus... and are (were?) designed for photographers/beneficial to photographers and public; not geared toward a prestigious gathering/ market opportunity for the "photographic community". Come to think of it, another discussion could be : what makes an event a (joyful) festival?

The Inge Morath Award 2009

The Magnum Foundation and the Inge Morath Foundation announce the sixth annual Inge Morath Award. The annual prize of $5,000 is awarded to a female documentary photographer under the age of 30, to support the completion of a long-term project. One award winner and up to two finalists are selected by a jury composed of Magnum photographers.

Established by Magnum Photos and HP with the goal of raising awareness and inspiring change through campaigns using photography as an expressive medium.
The inaugural theme for the award is Communities.

Criteria for Evaluation
» Excellence & inventiveness in building a photographic narrative.
» Singularity of vision and compassion for the subjects.
» Ability to produce a thought-provoking visual presentation.

The winner of the Magnum Expression Award will receive an HP Designjet Z3200. Photo Printer and a package of media supplies provided by HP. The winner will also receive a $10,000 cash prize to support continued work on the winning project; the opportunity to produce a multimedia essay of the winning entry in collaboration with Magnum’s Magnum in Motion team; sponsorship for the production of exhibition prints on an HP Designjet Z3200 for a solo exhibition of the winning entry; a $3000 credit for production of the winning essay in book form on HP Indigo printers in collaboration with Blurb.com; a customizable PhotoShelter pro account and website for one year; and advice and mentorship from a Magnum photographer regarding the continuation of the winning project.

The jury of the KLM Paul Huf Award 2009, organised by Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, chose the portfolio of Leonie Purchas (United Kingdom 1978) as the winning one. The jury was impressed by the quality and diversity of the submissions made by photographers from all over the world. Among the 81 nominees there were 41 from Europe, 13 from Asia, 13 from the United States and Canada, 11 from South and Central America, 3 from Africa". Full press release

For a talented young photographer from anywhere in the world that was nominated and selected by the Jury. (Foam approached ten nominators and asked them to nominate ten young and talented photographers).

The prize can be awarded to any form of photography: from documentary or applied photography to photojournalism or artistic work. The work of the winner must demonstrate a well-defined visual idiom, and it must be distinctive in its content as well as formal aspects..

The prize consists of a cash sum of € 20,000, a three-week period as an artist-in-residence in Amsterdam and an exhibition at Foam in September 2009.

"In 1991, Lou Stoumen established an endowed gift to be given through MoPA to a photographer whose work related in spirit to his own humanistic approach to photography. The Legacy exhibition features photographs by the 2009 Stoumen Prize winner, Mikhael Subotzky, whose documentary photographs of South African prisons are both compassionate and revealing. The exhibition continues with previous Stoumen winners Debbie Fleming Caffery (1996), Kenro Izu (1999), James Nachtwey (2002), and Gary Schneider (2006) by examining new work alongside the photographs that won them the award".

2008 : "IPA awards Lucies to those in the creative community who are an integral part of crafting an image. The nominations are submitted by IPA members and the IPA Photographers Advisory Board".

2009 : "All category winners (professional and non-professional) will then compete for the highest award which will be announced at the Lucies as the International Photographer of the Year award, receiving the $10,000 cash prize provided by AtEdge and the coveted Lucie statue. In addition, the seven winners from the non-professional categories will compete for the Discovery of the Year award, which will also be announced at the Lucies, receiving a $5,000 cash prize provided by Pilsner Urquell and the Lucie statue."

Mmmh, but my new questions are now : who is nominating/selecting lucie winners (the top three winners of the IPA competition that are announced during the Lucie Awards)? Sorry, I can not find an explanation. Judges and Judging Committee? What is the role of the Judging Committee?

p.s. I just read in RF1208_IPA "that they had almost 23,000 submissions from 124 countries around the world". Counting out loud : 23,000 x USD 25 = collected entry fees USD 575,000! Much money. What was it spent on? Does the IPA contest machinery adds up to that?

24th international fashion and photography festival Villa Noailles, Hyères / april 24th to 27th, 2009

Every Spring in the South of France, the 'International Fashion and Photography Festival' spotlights young promising artists in the fields of fashion and photography. The festival proposes diverse exhibitions, professional panel discussions and two competitions. The competitions showcase 10 fashion designers and 10 photographers selected by a jury of professionals in each field. The work of the chosen candidates is presented to the jury and the public in either fashion shows (designers) or group exhibitions (photographers).

On the last days of the month of April, as every Spring since 1998, the villa Noailles will once again become the epicenter for emerging photography. There, in the photography section of the Festival de Hyères, ten artist-photographers will exhibit their personal conjugation of the verb to see. Hyères defends and praises photographic works that strive for sense, singularity, innovation and uncompromising artistic standards. The bodies of work spotlighted at Hyères are still being born. Yet, the articulateness of their aesthetic stances confidently allows us to bet on their projection into the future.

For twelve years now, The Voies Off festival has offered an alternative look on emerging photography with its own specificities, its evolution and its struggles...

The evening shows staged by the Rencontres d'Arles Voies off Festival have become a worldwide reference for the discovery of new artists and the follow-up of photographic creation. Through its themes, the festival takes a critical look at the evolution of the present world. Each year, around twenty different nationalities are represented at the Festival Voies Off.

Each year The Voies off Prize, granted by a jury of saluted professionals, is awarded for an artist's high-quality work and insightful vision. A 2000 Euro grant will be awarded to the prizewinner.

La commission de sélection choisit les dossiers qui présentent un travail personnel et original, sous la forme d'une série déterminée par une unité de pensée, de vision ou de thème. Yearly. Open to ex-students of Post-Diploma courses in Photography, students of Art academies, students majoring in Architecture, Design, Art Conservation, Visual Communications, art History, Photography throughout Europe.

The works of both the first and second prize winners will be purchased by the Museo di fotografia Contemporanea.

The best project will receive a prize of 3500 Euro. 35 Euro participation fee is required.

The theme of the work, pursuing continuity with the thematic choices made by Riccardo in his formative years, is: NARRATING A PLACE.

Also I copy the info on the Major Prize : "The image with the highest score from this panel will be awarded USD$25,000.00".

Despite the October statement -see screenshot- the prize did went down significantly. Although to me USD 25,000 is still a very substantial amount, I am uncomfortable with the shift, yet not surprised...

27 September, 17.00 h | Since my post of 5 September, more information about this competition has been made available on the website. I keep this post on my blog, because I am curious to see how a competition like this evolves. But I doubt that this one belongs here. My aim is to flag serious, transparent events that generate exposure/publicity (photo exhibitions/books etc.) and that focus on and promote photography and the views of the photographer. They should be opportunities for photographers.

I'm flagging this one with question marks and exclamation mark!

"The image with the highest score from this panel will be awarded USD 100,000.00". But than again, they charge USD 250 entry fee!

Would you pay USD 250 and enter such an unknown event? Do you see it as an opportunity?

We have been developing software in the area of events management and particularly photographic awards area for a Professional Institute for a number of years. We have a product we are taking to the world to sell and thought rather than spend large money on advertising we would run this event. "The renowned photographic competition, the Leica Oskar Barnack Award will be celebrating its 30th year in 2009. On the occasion of this special jubilee, Leica Camera AG has revised the entry conditions and included numerous changes.

Entries for the Leica Oskar Barnack Award/Newcomers Award 2009 will be accepted as online submissions between 15 January and 1 March 2009.

A Newcomers Award will be incorporated in the competition for the first time. The competition for this award is open to all (prospective) photographers who are aged 25 years and under.

An international jury awards the Leica Oskar Barnack Award / Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award to photographers whose unerring powers of observation capture and express the relationship between man and the environment in the most graphic form in a sequence of up to 12 images. Entry submissions must be a self-contained series of images in which the photographer perceives and documents the interaction between man and the environment with acute vision and contemporary visual style – creative, groundbreaking and unintrusive.

The winner of the Leica Oskar Barnack Award will receive 5,000 euros or, alternatively, Leica camera equipment to the same value. The winner of the Newcomer Award will be awarded 2,500 euros. 2008 winner : Lucia Nimcova

Photographer Lucia Nimcova has been chosen as the winner of this year’s Leica Oskar Barnack Award for her photo project “Unofficial“. The pictures of the winning series were taken in 2007 in Slovakia. Taking her home town as an example, she documents how time seems to have stood still since the fall of the Communist regime. Even years later, people and places do not seem to have changed at all, almost as if time had passed them by unnoticed and without a trace.

Reportage's aim is to inform, share and inspire the visual community and the general public alike. The festival also provides an opportunity to celebrate the camaraderie that keeps the profession of independent photography alive.

Entering into Reportage is free and open to local and international professional photojournalists and students of photojournalism.

Editors from international magazines will choose the best young reporter for the City of Perpignan Young Reporter award which is being presented for the sixth time.

The members of the jury will select the young photographer who, in their opinion, has produced the best report, either published or unpublished in 2010/2011. The work is featured as an exhibition at Visa pour l’Image-Perpignan 2011. The City of Perpignan sponsors the prize of €8000.

The prize is given in recognition of talent and is designed to help the young photographer carry out a project.

The 2011 winner is Ed Ou for his report on child soldiers in Somalia.
