 I can't find information on 2011 prizes and jury. No prizes this time? I did see an Appel à candidatures pour la sélection des artistes présentés dans l’exposition panafricaine, but I can't download/open the documents. "This African Photography Biennial, which is now recognised around the world, has been a key event for the last 17 years in the African and Caribbean artistic programme supported by the Institut français. Through the Bamako Encounters, we have supported African artistic creation around three major themes: supporting creation -by producing prints of the photos in the exhibition, which belong to the artists and provide them with a source of revenues – supporting training –through photography workshops organised in Africa between biennials – supporting visibility –in venues devoted to contemporary art or art marketplaces. Here in Bamako, the World can discover and recognise the creativity of African artists. Bamako is also where artists can meet with professionals to discuss new projects that will allow them to show their work in London, Sao Paulo or Tokyo. And in France, during Paris Photo, we can find the young artists discovered at the Bamako Encounters in recent years. " Read more.

« Rencontres de Bamako, Biennale africaine de la photographie » 7 novembre – 7 décembre 2009.

This call for submissions is directed toward all photographers and video artists on the African continent, regardless of where they reside. All supports—film-based, digital or other—are eligible. This year’s theme is Borders.

Le présent appel à candidatures s'adresse aux photographes et vidéastes du continent africain et porte sur l'exposition internationale de la 8e édition des Rencontres de Bamako - Biennale Africaine de la Photographie dont la thématique sera celle des Frontières.

The theme is exceedingly current while also being paradoxical in a world favoring global nomadism and the partial disappearance of borders. From natural barriers to artificial lines traced across the earth, in Africa more than elsewhere, borders and their complex realities represent current problematics and the crystallizations of processes which are political, economic, sociocultural, and at this time particularly tied up with ethnic, cultural, religious and other sorts of personal and group identifications.

Si les effets de la globalisation et du libéralisme économique ont permis la porosité de certaines frontières, par ailleurs, des urgences économiques et politiques continuent à dessiner des flux migratoires confrontés davantage à l’étanchéité des frontières. L'humanité demeure sans cesse en quête de refuges, de repères et de valeurs autour des territoires auxquels elle s'identifie et s'enracine. La frontière matérielle ou symbolique implique une notion de territoire délimité au-delà duquel se dessinent l'ailleurs, l'autrement et l'étranger.

La date de clôture des dépôts de dossier est fixée au 20 avril 2009 / All application materials must be received by April 20, 2009.

The 8th edition of the Bamako Encounters, African Photography Biennial has set out to get the population of Bamako more involved in the event, explore the cross-cutting nature of disciplines and languages, and reinforce the event's influence and notoriety on the international scene so that Bamako will in time be seen as the African capital of image. Alongside the programme of exhibitions, there will be a symposium, screenings and learning trails.

La 8e édition des Rencontres de Bamako, Biennale africaine de la photographie a pour objectif de renforcer l’implication du public bamakois vis-à-vis de la manifestation, d’explorer la transversalité des disciplines et des langages, de renforcer l’influence et la notoriété de l’événement sur la scène internationale afin qu’à terme, Bamako puisse être perçue comme la capitale africaine de l'image. En outre, un colloque, des projections, des parcours pédagogiques accompagneront le programme des expositions.
